The vibrant colors of the ocean floor are a magnet for divers and snorkelers, even though we were surrounded by a sky the color of the Caribbean. It’s not simply the four states of Yucatan, Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Tabasco that call the Yucatan Peninsula home. It is a common misconception that the Yucatán Peninsula and the state of Yucatán are the same location. The Yucatan Peninsula is a paradise that juts out into the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. It’s one of Mexico’s most popular tourist spots. More and more people are visiting the Yucatán because of the low cost of flights from larger cities. Cancn may be the most well-known beach and party destination in Mexico, but that’s far from all the peninsula has to offer. During our 15-day journey, we dove headfirst into the rich culture, history, and food of this breathtaking corner of Mexico. If you want to see everything this peninsula has to offer, renting a car is the best option. We describe our journey from Cancun International Airport to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve by way of Tulum and Akumal. Along with the lovely colonial city of Campeche, we also saw the ruins at Bacalar and Calakmul.
